Thai Beer

Tasted in 2026

Call Me Mama: Wheat Beer, 5% (Thai Spirit Industry)

Oranges and lemons, with a hint of coriander and papaya. Clean and refreshing with a gentle bitterness. 6.5/10

Call Me Papa: Hazy Milkshake IPA, 6.5% (Thai Spirit Industry)

Very sweet. Milky, with a lactose bite. Mild coffee, background hops, slightly metallic. Muted tropical fruits. It’s very flat, which is a bit disappointing. 5.5/10

Honey Lager: 5% (Vana Brewing Company)

This is made with Thai longan flower honey. It is very floral, with notes of lavender and Palma Violets. The sweetness is gentle and the carbonation is soft. It tastes increasingly of hospitals. The floral honey is quite interesting, but it’s ultimately shuffled to the back by bandages. 3/10

Lotus Hazy Pale Ale 5.5% (Maha Nakhon Micro Brewery)

Big on the fresh apricots, light mango and herbal hops. Some full and plump stewed fruits. Clean pine and bitter on finish. 7/10

M32 Vanilla Porter: Flavoured Porter, 4.8% (Mardi Craft Brewing Co)

The smell of vanilla is overwhelming. It blends in a bit on the first sip, but it is quite artificial. Huge cocoa. Cappuccino, milk bottle sweets, a bit creamy. No bitterness. It’s quite artificial tasting, but they have packed in some very distinct flavours, and it’s impressive to pull off and still retain the beer elements. 6/10

M32 IPA: 6.2% (Mardi Craft Brewing Co)

Grassy hops, with underlying fruity tones which are quite classic but unremarkable. Distinctly bitter and a bit too heavy to be crisp and refreshing. 6/10

Samila Strawberry Cheesecake: Fruit Sour Beer, 5.5% (Samila Brewing)

This is teeth-rottingly sweet. The most sickly sweet alcoholic drink I have ever tasted. The sourness is there, but it’s so overwhelmed by the sugar. A half of this for dessert would be kind of okay, but chugging through a 500ml can of this was a struggle. 3/10

Summerlay Fin Fin: Hazy IPA, 6% (Full Moon Brewworks)

It’s recommended pairing is grilled octopus. I paired it with more beer. Fruity, with standard citrus flavours and some tropical juice. Medium dry hoppiness. Very bitter. 5/10

Summer Sky: Orange IPA 6.5% (Chiang Mai Beer)

Lovely soft seville orange background with a hit of grapefruit coming through. Robust hops. Shades of Capri Sun. Not too sweet though; it has a balanced hoppy bitterness. A bit skunky. It’s very flat – if it was more lively it would be fantastic. 7.5/10

Thai Myth Series – Chao Ngor Pa: Dark Lager 4.7% (Mardi Craft Brewing Co)

Sweet chocolate, malt, cake. Low carbonation. It really does strongly taste of a light chocolate cake. I love chocolate cake, so this is great, but if I’m objective it’s one dimensional which stops it being an amazing beer. 7.5/10

Thai Myth Series – Chao Sungthong: Rice Lager, 4.7% (Mardi Craft Brewing Co)

A snap of fresh lemon makes this quite sour. Although there is a distinct creaminess from the obvious rice, it doesn’t provide enough sweetness to overcome this hurdle. A pleasant malty, cereal taste throughout, but very dry on the finish. 4.5/10

Thai Myth Series – Phra Aphai Man: Wheat Beer 4.7% (Mardi Craft Brewing Co)

Pineapple, tangy sherbet, salted lime. The wheat is faint and there is very little sweetness. Soft mouthfeel, but good carbonation. A really genius Thai twist on the style. 9/10

Tasted in 2022 & 2023

Chiang: Thai Lager, 5% (Cosmos Brewery)
Very light, slightly sweet and herbal. It’s very clean, though there’s not much to it. 5/10

Singha: Thai Lager, 5% (Boon Rawd Brewery)
Very pale, high carbonation, slight citrus. Mildly sweet; no bitterness at all. Bland. 5/10

Leo: Thai Lager, 5% (Boon Rawd Brewery)
This one is slightly nuttier and a bit grassier than the others, with a bitter bite on the end. Still very bland. 5/10

Leo Number 8 – Strong Brew: Thai Lager, 5.1% (Boon Rawd Brewery)
Standard Leo beer is 5% abv, but Leo strong is a whopping 0.1% higher, so watch yourself with this beast. In all fairness, it does taste more full bodied than its baby brother, with the nuttiness in particular being amplified. It was my favourite of the Thai beers, if only because it was marginally less bland than the others. 5.5/10
