Chinese Beer

Dali: Lager, 3.3% (Yunnan Dali Beer Group)

Weighing in at an outrageous abv is this light lager from Yunnan. Malty, bready and with light hops, but not too bitter. It is a little bit worty, but still fine if you want a refreshing light beer. 4.5/10

George IPA: 6% (Aolan Brewery)

A background of mastic and rubber. Apricots and stewed stone fruit. Very muted hops. Quite strongly bitter on the finish. Not a typical IPA profile. I wasn’t keen on it at first, but it grew on me a bit as the pint went on. 6/10

George Amber Ale: 5% (Aolan Brewery)

It has an aged oak flavour to it, with a hint of leather. Lots of walnuts and hazelnuts with a burst of cocoa. A hint of Savlon. 8/10

George Passion Fruit Cider: 3.5% (Aolan Brewery)

The profile of this is much more like a flavoured wheat beer than a cider, so I think the term was a bit lost in translation. And it is brilliant. Lovely, balanced sweetness, with a tart bite. Soft and full. The passion fruit makes this beer more complex, rather than blasting through everything like many fruit beers. 9/10

George Wheat: 4% (Aolan Brewery)

It has the typical burst of banana, and hits the general notes of a wheat beer in a generic way. Fluffy, but very clean, quite thin, and a little bit flat. 4.5/10

Highland Hunter: Wheat Beer, 5% (Highland Brewery)

Light, bready and crisp. The classic wheat beer citrus and banana, but quite muted. Slightly juicy. Not a complex beer, but it’s surprisingly decent. 5/10

Panda Passion Fruit: Flavoured Wheat Beer, 3.7% (Jack Panda Brewery)

Passion fruit is light. It is sweet, but not sickly and has some tartness. Light honey. Tea. Hints of peach. Very highly carbonated. It says on the label that this is “crafted beer for young people” so I’m not the target audience. 6/10

Son Gha: Pale Ale, 5.2% (Shangri-La Highland Craft Brewery)

Nice amount of malt, with a punch of citrus and some obvious barley. A hint of tea and some kiwi. Piney bitterness on the finish. 7/10

Wusu Red: Lager, 4% (Xinjiang Wusu Brewery)

Very light malt and light bitterness. Grassy, a bit gritty, some sulphur, quite a flat finish. It’s easy drinking. 4.5/10

Wusu Classic: Lager, 4% (Xinjiang Wusu Brewery)

See above

Zebra Weissbier: 4.5% (Zebra Craft)

Barely ripe banana, pear, lots of yeast. Faint coriander, grapefruit and some biscuit notes. A little bit dank, but overall quite light. 5.5/10
